South of Back Bay, the South End is home to the Boston Ballet, the Boston Center for the Arts, Boston Medical Center, and many art galleries and studios. This higher priced neighborhood is home to a very diverse population and was once a safe-haven for GLBT people in the 1940’s. Today the neighborhood is rich culture and restaurants. Tremont Street, sometimes referred to as “Restaurant Row”, provides residents with dining options of American southern “Low Country” to Thai and Ethiopian. The South End is also an area of specialty shops and services, aimed towards upper-middle class shoppers. The neighborhood also offers more public playgrounds per square foot than any other Boston neighborhood.
